Scallorn, better known as "Grandpa Scallorn,: died at his residence in Plum Grove neighborhood nine miles above LaGrange, Fayette County, Texas, January 1, 1888, having been sick since last November 5th. Special mention has been made of him by brother Morell in "Flowers and Fruits of Texas ," page 197. He was born in Granville County, North Carolina, December 18, 1796. He moved from there to Fayette County, Texas, in 1837. He was married to Miss Alice McClure on the 25th day of December, 1818, to whom he was devotedly attached until death called her home May 17, 1881. He joined the Baptist Church at the age of 26 years. He and his wife were baptized at the same time and place. His brother, Stephen Scallorn, died at the age of 100 years and 10 months, only a few days in advance of William, Dec. 24, 1887. Fayette County within nine days lost two of her oldest and most respected citizens. From what Brother Morrell said, and those who knew him recognized in him, an earnest man of God, and a true Christian worker. I knew him from my earliest recollections. I - as all who knew him - loved him. I was his pastor for three years in my early ministry. He was such a help and comfort to a young pastor, he was an active deacon in the Plum Grove Church as long as he had strength to act. I always enjoyed his presence and counsel, and looked to him truly as a "Father of Israel." His life was so pure and consecrated that his children and grandchildren grew up around him and liked to call him "blessed." I liked to hear his voice in prayer and exhortation to the saints and sinners, and often saw him when he seemed too happy for earth, and was ready for the call to death , whensoever made. When Major Penn held his meeting 13 days in LaGrange 9 years ago last December. Old Father Scallorn went down on horse-back and remained till after night service, and then rode back 9 miles distant. I was surprised to see a man 82 years old stand such trips. Two years later when Major Penn held a camp meeting at San Marcos, Brother Scallorn rode horse- back to attend the meeting 40 miles distant. July 4th, 1876, he had a Barbecue (feast) and invited all his children and neighbors. There were 80 of his descendants present.Brother Scallorn was the first Baptist deacon ordained in Texas, the date of his ordination being July 11, 1840.He has gone to his reward, leaving his large circle of children and friends to mourn his absence, as well as a host of ministers of early days in Texas,to drop a tear of grief as they hear the sad news. Dr. J.H.Stribling, Dr. J.A. Kimble, Bro. P.B. chandler and others will recall many happy hours spent with dear old Father Scallorn. He is gone, but not forgotten. Old Plum Grove with its host of young brethren will still feel the power of his Godly life. One by one our fathers are crossing over and leaving the younger man to follow in their footsteps. May God comfort and bless and sorrowing daughters and grandchildren who devotedly loved him. N.B. William moved with his parents when he was small to Kentucky, and from there to the WesternDistrict of Tennessee where he was married. He was listed in the 1830 Fayette County, Tennessee census and came overland to Fayette County,Texas in the fall of 1837. Z.N . Morrell mentions William on pp. 153 & 154 also. Major Penn, the Evangelist was a cousin of some sort but I do not know the exact relationship. Family tradition says that the Scallorns are descendants of William Penn, the Founder. I have researched the Penn line and have not found any proof of a family relationship. One of Penn's descendants married a Skillern in Alabama(this name could be a variant of Scallorn or Scallorn a variant of Skillern - Skillern were in Ireland since ancient times). I have researched the Skillern line in Ireland, but as of 1997 have not been able to find any conclusive proof of relationship. Elinor F.S.
