      Joshua Haycraft enlisted on 20 February 1777 as a Private in theinfantry in Captain Charles Porterfield's Company of the 11thVirginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel Daniel Morgan. He servedfrom February to May 1778 at Valley Forge with the 7th VirginiaRegiment (Continental Line). The Seventh Virginia Regimentmembers included: Joshua Haycraft, William Gibbs, MathiasMartin, William Hinds, Alexander Dresdal, Daniel Rich, JohnMalvin, Aaron Redmond, Peter Sherriden, Thomas Miller, JosephFox, William Campbell, Daniel Burcher, Moses Plain, ThomasRoberts, Peter Barret, Sylvester Hurly, Alexander Strickling,Charles Steward, John Kelly (the father of Rebecca Kelly Haycraft, Joshua's second wife). It is thought that at the timeof his initial enlistment, Joshua resided in Amelia orPittsylvania County, Virginia.

      Joshua Haycraft served in Company No. 4 under the command ofCaptain Charles Porterfield on 1 June 1777, as did John Kelly.On 30 November 1778, he again appears in the roster of theCompany of Captain Charles Porterfield, Lieutenants PhillipSlaughter and David Williams. Joshua Haycraft and John Kelly arelisted as privates in that company. Saffell, W.T.R. Records ofthe Revolutionary War, Part II - © 1894- "Officers andPrivates," pgs. 260- 61. Capt. Porterfield served under ColonelDaniel Morgan, who commanded the 11th and 15th VirginiaRegiments during that time period. Id. at 256.

      Joshua Haycraft, born VA abt 1745 - 55 appears in HistoricalRegister of Virginians in the Revolution, Soldiers, Sailors andMarines, 1775 - 1783. Ed. John H. Gwathmey, Richmond, VA 1938(13, 872 pp.) He served at Valley Forge during the terrible,harsh winter in 1777 - 78 with the 7th Virginia Regiment. InJuly 1778, he served with his unit in Camp White Plains and inCamp Middlebrook while still under the command of CaptainCharles Porterfield.

      He apparently owned land -- possibly Revolutionary War BountyLand -- in Sumner County, Tennessee. His deposition was taken atthe home of Joshua Ferguson in Nelson County, Kentucky in thecourt case of Wynn v. Mason in 1789. This makes it evident that he was inKentucky by 1789.

      He appears in the tax list for Nelson County, Kentucky in 1792.In 1796, he is listed in the Hardin County tax records as awhite male over 21 with 1 horse and 2 cattle. He did not ownland in Hardin County until about 1799. Source: Family HistoryLibrary Microfilm # 8013.

      Joshua appears in the 1800 tax lists - Kentucky - Hardin county- no township listed.

      He appears in the 1810 Federal Census - Kentucky - GraysonCounty, page 243. Household composition: 2 males under 10; 1male 16 - 25; 1 male over 45 (Joshua); 1 female 10 - 15(Rebecca); 1 female over 45 (Rebecca); no slaves. (Note,however, that he signed a consent for daughter Susan or Susannahto marry in Barren County in 1807).

      According to post on Haycraft Genforum message board on 18 Mar200 (#33 of 75) Joshua Haycraft died 1814 in Grayson County.
