  • Notes
    • He married, second, Isabella Young, Jun 1761, in Augusta Co, VA. Born, circa 1738. Died, afte r 1806, in Barren Co, KY. She appears to havebeen the widow of Patrick Young who dated his w ill April 4, 1761 inAugusta County, Virginia. It was probated May 19, 1761 and named asexec utor his wife, Isabella.

(Chronicles of Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Records of AugustaCo, VA 1745 - 1800 b y Chalkley Vol. III, p.62.) In Patrick's will henames his wife, ISABELLA, and son, JAMES, an d daughters, SARAH,JANNET, and ALEXANDRIA. In the same source in Vol. II p. 342 is alawsui t of Summers vs Campbell where John Summers and wife, Isabella, late Isabella Young, complai n of James Campbell and Richard Woods, dated June 23, 1761.

So, between May 19, 1761 and June 23, 1761 John Summers must havemarried the widow Isabell a Young. As further proof that this is theIsabella that John Summers married is from the sam e source in Vol.III, p. 78 dated November 18, 1762 where John Summers makes bond withJame s McDowell and James Trimble as guardian to orphans of PatrickYoung who are Sarah, James, Ja nnet and Alexandria Young. From thesame source in Vol. I p. 137 dated August 19, 1767, Sara h Young age16 and James Young age 15, orphans of Patrick Young, chose Samuel Toddas their g uardian and he was appointed guardian of Jannet andAlexandria Young also. Sarah was born cir ca 1751. If her mother wasat least 18 years old at Sarah's birth, then Isabella was born cir ca1733.

At first glance it seems strange that Isabella would marry so soonafter her husband's death . However, she had four children and theliving conditions were rather primitive and impossib le for a womanalone to make a living. John Summers had a baby about 18 months oldand neede d a mother for his child. So, apparently, they married tosolve both their problems.
      Children:
ii. Isabella Summers. Born, 27 Jan 1770, in Botetourt Co, VA. Died, 11Sep 1850, in Morgan Co , KY10. She married Henry Bushong, 4 Jul 1791.
      iii. Samuel Summers.
iv. Mary Summers. She married Mr. Clark.
      v. William Summers. He married Sarah. They went to Ohio about 1817from Barren County, Kentuc ky. (Barren County, Kentucky Deed Book F,p. 172 dated July 21, 1817)

The earliest reference to John Summers is October 27, 1760, AugustaCounty, Virginia when h e was Testator to the will of John Colyer.(Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virg inia - Records ofAugusta County, Virginia, 1745 - 1800 by Chalkley, Vol III, p. 90)Variou s court records are found for John in Augusta County untilFebruary 1770 when he is found i n Botetourt County, Virginia.Botetourt County was formed in 1769 from Augusta County, Virgin ia.Therefore, it is very possible that John did not move.
When the application for his Revolutionary War pension was made in1833 in Jackson County, Al abama, by his son, John, Jr. and in asecond pension application in 1837 he stated that his p arents (JohnSummers, Sr. & Isabelle) and family lived in Washington County,Virginia, Fayett e, Clark, Green and Barren Counties, Kentucky.

By 1781 John is found in Washington County, VA.

1790 John is in Fayette County, Kentucky. Two 'John Summers', his sonwas the other one.

In 1794 he is in Clark County, Kentucky.

In 1800 he has moved to Barren County, Kentucky where he died. Moreproof that this is "our J ohn" comes from the Revolutionary WarPension application of John Summers, Jr.,(born in May 1 760) the sonof our John Summers, Sr. where he states that he lived in the abovecounties.

Even though John died in Barren County, Kentucky, two of his childrenmoved to Jackson County , Alabama. John named all of his children inhis will including naming Mary as Mary Clark. N o marriage has beenfound for her yet. He married, first, an unknown woman.
