The Republican ladies of Springville gathered in force at the city hall on Monday, pursuant to call by Mrs. H, M. Dougall and Mrs. Harriet Brinton, for the purpose of organizing a ladies club. There were present from Provo. County Chairman J. C. Graham, Mrs. Jane Snyder, of the county executive committee, Mrs. Grace Cheever secretary of the Ladies’ executive committee, C, De Moisy and J. G. Coltrin.
The meeting was called to order be Precinct Chairman Geo. McKenzie.
Mr. S. A. Cooper was elected temporary chairman, and Miss Sophia Packard was elected temporary secretary.
Mr. Graham made a few remarks as to the object of the meeting and explained the purpose of and duties connected with clubs organized under the auspices of the Republican party. He spoke of the success that thus far attended such organizations in Utah county, and of the work that could be accomplished by the organized efforts of the enfranchised ladies in behalf of the Republican party.
Mrs. Jane Snyder made appropriate remarks and the work of effecting a permanent organization of the Ladies’ Republican club of Springville was proceeded with.
The following are the officers elected: President, Mrs. Mary N. Hall, vice-Presidents, Mrs. Mary Findlay and Mrs. Harriet Hammond; Secretary, Mrs. Zina Cummings, Assistant secretary, Miss Sophia Packard; Treasurer, Mrs. G. P. Thompson, Executive committee, Mrs. M. C. Dougall (chairman), Mrs. S. A. Cooper, Mrs. M. J. Matson, Mrs. Jane Packard, Mrs. Harriet Brinton, Mrs. Louie Whitehead, Mrs. Julia Whitehead, Mrs. Minnie Chase. Mrs. Electa Sumsion, Mrs, Olive Westwood, Mrs. Sarah H. Houtz.
The permanent chairman, Mrs. Hall, was then introduced and made a few remarks acknowledging the honor of her election.
It was decided to elect committees on entertainment and reception.
On entertainment: Miss Maud Allen (chairman). Mrs. E.N. Hill, Miss Blanch Cook, Mrs. Julia Packard, Mrs. Martha Cook, Mrs. Mary Thorn, Mrs. Viola Crandall, Miss Pearl Westwood, Mrs. Lucia Huntington, Mrs. Elizabeth Boyer, Miss Kitty Dougall, Miss Marian Crandall.
On reception: Mrs. Matilda Houtz {chairman} Mrs. Hannah Davis, Mrs. Lydia Johnson, Mrs. Lucy Roylance, Mrs. Rhoda Dougall, Mrs. Elizabeth McKinley. Mrs. Reta Crandall. Mrs. Nellie Straw.
Mr. De Moisy made a speech, chiefly dwelling on the legal rights of women as voters. It was a most instructive address.
Father Wm. Mendenhall, was introduced as the oldest Republican in Springville. He is 80 years of age. He stated that he had voted in 1840 for Wm Henry Harrison- “Tippecanoe and Tyler too�
A brief but interesting address was delivered by Charles D. Evans.
Some further suggestions were offered by Chairman Graham, in relation to the duties of the executive committee and the necessity of early enrollment.
This club, it was stated, has now and enrollment of 300. The meeting was the most enthusiastic and earnest affair of the kind that has taken place yet in this county.
An adjournment was taken until Tuesday, Aug 20th, at 2 o’clock.

Springville, March 28, - Mrs. Harriet M. Brinton, wife of S. A. Brinton of this city and daughter of ex-Sheriff John W. Turner of Provo, died this morning at 1 o’clock of diabetes. She was not considered to be dangerously sick, but yesterday morning she took a change for the worse and sank rapidly until she expired at the hour stated.
The deceased was 32 years old the 10th of October last, and was born and raised in Provo. She leaves four small children, the oldest being 10 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at the Third ward Latter-day Saints’ meetinghouse at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning.
