Zema Floyd Worthy Jr.

Phenix City, Al- Longtime Phenix City educator, U.S. Navy submariner, and retired U.S. Army Captain, Zema F. Worthy Jr., passed away on Thursday, April 29 at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center, Dublin, Ga.
Mr. Worthy attended the University of Alabama and graduated from Auburn University with a BA in Economics and Masters Degree in Education, and AAA certificate in Education. He was a teacher, coach, assistant principal at Central High School and Principal of South Girard School. He retired after 36 years of dedicated service with the Phenix City Board of Education.
A leader in civic and service clubssthat included the Lions CLub, charter member of the Kiwanis Club, past governor of the Phenix City Moose Lodge, life member of Wilson Williams Lodge #351, F&AM Alcazar Shrine of Montgomery, Ala., and the Phenix City Shrine Club.
Mr. Worthy was the son of the late Zema Floyd Worthy and Ethel Mae Chadwick Worthy. He was married to Frances East Worthy for 57 years. In addition to his wife surviovrs are: Thomas Floyd Worthy and his wife Donna of Phenix City, Ala., Vicki Worthy Blake of Utah, Patricia Worthy Baker and husband Kenneth of Dublin, Ga,. Carol Worthy Donahue and husband Robert of Lakeside, Ga., Lt. Commander James Worthy and wife Laura of Pell City, Ala., Kim Worthy Call of Lawrenceville, Ga., Timothy Allen Worthy and wife Ann of Geneva, Ga., Daniel Worthy of Phenix City; 16 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held p.m. Est Monday, May 3 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Ala,. according to Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City with Chaplain Jack E. Brown officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phenix City, AL- Zema Floyd Worthy, Jr., 79 of 1502 Fletcher Drive, Phenix City died after a prolonged illness at Carl Vincent Medical Center, Dublin.
Gravedside funeral service will be held 2:00pm EST, Monday, May 3 at Ft Mitchell National Cemetery with Chaplain Jack E. Brown officiating according to Vance Memorial Chapel, Phenix City. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
The son of the late Zema Floyd Worthy, Sr. and Ethel Chadwick Worthy of Phenix City. He is preceded in death by his first grandson, Glenn Dennis Lee and a sister, Margaret Worthy Mallory of Phenix City.
A graduate of Central High School he joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served as a submariner aboard the U.S.S. Balar in the South Pacific.
Upon his return he attended the University of Alabama and later continued his studies at Auburn University where he earned his Masters Degree in Education and AA Teacher's Certificate in 1953.
He served the Phenix City Board of Education for 38 years during which time he held positions including classroom teacher, basketball coach when he initiated the first Bi-City Christmas Basketball Tournament, football coach with Tommy Garrett's staff and was Asst. Principal at Central High School and Principal of South Girard High School.
He was appointed by the Alabama State Superintendent of Education to serve on the State Textbook Committee for two years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 60 years where he served as Deacon.
Among his many community service achievements were: President of the first Kiwanis Club of Phenix City (committee developed Lakewood Park), Jaycees member (Young Man of the Year), (established the Phenix City/Russell CO Library), (Library property was donated by American Legion Post 135) Director of Parks and Recration (Served as building fund Chairman for the newly organized Boys Club. THe Girls Club was also organized at this time.), Phenix City Shrine CLub Alcazar Temple (devoted member-held Shriner's Hospital in special regard). Director of March of Dimes for several years, Alabama National Guard (one of the first to enlist and recruit for members of the Alabama National Guard 203rd Artillery activated during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. He retired as Captain, Loyal Order of Moose member-past Governor Wilson Williams Masonic Lodge# Mason 32nd degree (conducting Masonic Ceremony at burial site).
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances East Worthy; children, Thomas Floyd Worthy and wife, Donna of Phenix City, Vicki Worthy Blake of Phenix City, Patsy Worthy Baker and husband, Kenny of Dublin, Ga., Carol Worthy Donahue and husband, Bob of Lakeside, Ca., Timothy Allen Worthy of wife, Ann of Geneva, Ga., Kimberly Worthy Call and husband, Mike of Lawrenceville, Ga., Whilliam Daniel Worthy of Phenix City; grandchildren, Corey Worthy of Ocala, Fla., Amy Worthy Foss of Columbus, Benjamin Worthy of Richmond, Va., Scott Lee of Phenix City, Audrey Hogan of Dublin, Ga., Jennifer Rowland of Dublin, Ga., Ben Baker of Dublin, Ga., Eric Lindquist of Lakeside, Calif., Russell Lindquist of Lakeside, Calif., Randy Lindquist of Lakeside, Calif., Ingrid Lindquist of Los Angeles, Calif., Mary Lindquist of Lakeside, Calif., Beverly Lindquist of Lakeside, Calif., Matthew Worthy of Pell City, Ala., Megan Worthy of Pell City, Ala., Ethan Chancellor of Lawrenceville, Ga., Charlie Call of Lawrenceville, Ga., Luke Call of Lawrenceville, Ga,; nine great grandchildren.
