      Benjamin Owen Newsome
      March 30, 1914 - August 14, 2003

      Benjamin Owen Newsome, 89, of Midland, died Thursday, August 14 in St. Francis Hospital.
      Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 17 in Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel. Dr. LeBron Matthews and Rev. David Helms will officiate with a private interment in Parkhill Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Easter Heights Baptist Church and members of Columbus Fire Department. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
      Mr. Newsome was born March 30, 1914 in Phenix City, Ala., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Newsome. He was a lifelong resident of Columbus and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member and deacon emeritus of Eastern Heights Baptist Church.
      Mr. Newsome retired from City of Columbus Fire Department as District Fire Chief after 28 years of service.
      Survivors include his wife, Anna Frances Newsome of Midland; three daughters, Pat Mansell of Cataula, Ga., Joan Rodgers of Smiths, Ala., and Susan Wooldridge of Midland; a sister, Wilma Widdon of Columbus; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastern Heights Baptist Church.
