    • THE GRINNELL FAMILY

The Grinnell line began in France and has been traced as far as Pierre Renelle, collector of taxes in 1510, born about the year 1480 and married 15 March 1509 to a Marie Perrier.

      1. Mathew Grinnell was born in Macon, France in 1602. He was the son of Jean Grenelle, Lord of Pimont, keeper of the government salt stores and counsellor to the King. Jean inherited from his parents the estate of Pimont and a residence at Tounurs, and was also general heir at law of Claude Grennelle, his brother.

Mathew embraced the Protestant religion and from this fact was obliged to emigrate. He settled in Rhode Island.

He was admitted 20 May 1638 as an inhabitant of Newport. Five years later, 10 Nov. 1643, his widow Rose made ante-nuptial agreement with Anthony Paine, then of Portsmouth, whose wife she became. She deeded to her three sons Mathew, Thomas and Daniel, two...goats a piece and to her son Mathew a cow; also it was agreed that upon the death of either the property of the one deceased should go to the children of that person.

He married Mary Wordell, daughter of William and Mary Wordell, born in November 1640.

He was a malster. In 1656 he bought 30 acres of farm property in Portsmouth and on 8 June 1657 was received as an inhabitant of Portsmouth. In 1687 he left the island and took up his residence in Little Compton. In 1688 he deeded to his son Daniel Jr., the south half of the 13th lot in the grand division of Little Compton, and in 1694 to his son Richard the other half of this lot. It was one of the one hundred acre great lots of the first purchase. In 1702 Richard sold this to his father with 100 acres more, but on 6 July 1703 Daniel re-conveyed to the son, and appears no more of record.
