  [S27] Kings & Queens of England & Scotland , Plantagenet Somerset Fry , (DK Publishing, First American Edition, 1999 (paperback) ) (Reliability: 4). On page 27 of "Kings & Queens of England & Scotland" that he learned that he had succeeded to the throne on his way home from a Crusade in 1272. He was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1274. Edward took over the throne of Scotland as well, but was defeated by William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Edward defeated Wallace at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 before executing him in 1305 in London. Edward died on his way north to invade Scotland again in 1307.
