      Daniel KUNKEL, b. May 1, 1815 in York Co., Penn. At age ten, moved to Richland (now Morrow) Co., Ohio. He chopped wood and rolled logs; by age 21 had earned 80 acres of land. At age 21, married Veronica BEELER. Came to Mo. in 1847 and settled 1 mile east of Oregon. He made 50 wheat cradles and other similar articles his first season. Started building a mill and had it in operation in 1849. Put up a woolen mill in 1861. He invented and patented several items of tools and "two different improvements on washing machines. His washing machine has taken the premium at every fair" (exhibited), "including the highest award at the great Centennial exhibition, at Philadelphia, and is doubtless the best thing of the kind ever invented." Wife died Sept., 1853. Married Elizabeth HENER of Holt Co. Aug. 16, 1856. Had 6 children by each marriage. He has always been a strong Republican.
