Introduction
This cemetery is located off old Hwy 5 in the town of Ball Ground,
Cherokee County, Georgia next to the elementary school. It includes
a small black section.
We have presented the tombstone inscriptions herein in two forms: the
first is by lot or grouping of graves as this may provide hints of
relationships to those doing genealogical work, and second as an
alphabetical listing or index to the graves. The editor has a strong
bias that no good reference work is any better than its index, so every
effort has been made to make the index as complete as possible. Be sure
to check the alphabetical index of graves as all graves are not shown
by lot.
Names such as Chloe (Hayes) Ingram are listed as both Hayes, Chloe and
Ingram, Chloe. This is done where the middle name was either given on
the tombstone or known to us. We have taken the liberty of including
names not on the tombstone but known to us by enclosing them in () as
Chloe (Hayes) Ingram. Females with middle names that are known to be
their maiden names or that sound like maiden names are thus listed both
ways in the index.
The oldest people found buried in the cemetery are a couple:
Alfred Spence born 10-30-1813, died 3-26-1904 and
Sarah Spence born 3-31-1812, died 11-16-1885.
The oldest grave identified is Albert G. Kennedy, born 1 October 1804
and died 1 June 1865. This 1865 burial is the oldest we found.
This graveyard is located in Cherokee County inside the town of Ball
Ground, Georgia. In the past it was called the Ball Ground City
Cemetery to differentiate it from the Cemetery of the Ball Ground
Baptist Church which is located almost across street - the old Hwy 5
or Canton / Jasper road. An organization of citizens changed the name
about 1990 to the Ball Ground Community Cemetery and started a fund to
help defray the expense of keeping up the grounds.
The land was originally provided by the father of Sam M. Howell and the
grandfather of Louvenia Howell Barrett. The early burial lots were free,
although in later years the lots were purchased.
The compilers note a number of stones for unmarked graves but have no
way of identifying who is buried in these lots. Sue and Chink have
been active in maintaining the cemetery and are willing to help anyone
locate a grave there if possible or answer questions about the graves
or their upkeep if they can do so.
